The Paradigm Shift: AI Will Prompt You, Not the Other Way Around

For the last decade, our relationship with AI has been transactional: you ask a question, the system answers. You prompt, it responds. The human is always the initiator.

Magnus Müller thinks this is backward. Over the next few years, he expects the relationship to invert. Humans will set high-level goals. AI agents will run in the background, detect problems, and prompt you with proposed actions. You confirm, and the system executes.

This isn’t a small UI change. It’s a complete reconception of how we interact with autonomous systems.

The Problem With User-Driven Prompting

Google faced this constraint early on. Search works when you know what you’re looking for—you type a query, you get results. But Google learned something uncomfortable: most people don’t know what to search for. The system required users to formulate a question before it could help them.

“The only problem with Google is you need to know before what you will search. You need to type. You need to search first because you need to know what you’re looking for before you can type,” Magnus explains.

The same constraint applies to current AI agents. They wait for a prompt. You have to know what you want to automate. You have to break down a complex goal into specific tasks. Then you issue the prompt and watch.

But real work doesn’t work that way. Real goals are ongoing. You want “higher retention on my platform,” not “run this specific sequence of checks.” You want “make sure my docs stay healthy,” not “check my docs every Monday.”

You’re asking the system for task execution, when what you actually need is continuous optimization. The mismatch means either you forget to run the checks (passive failure) or you build cron jobs to prompt the system regularly (hacky workaround).

The Inversion: Agent-Driven Action Proposals

Imagine instead this workflow:

You tell your agent: “I want higher retention on my platform.”

The agent doesn’t ask “what should I do?” It starts working. It runs 24/7 or on a schedule. Every hour, it:

  1. Checks your platform analytics
  2. Analyzes user behavior
  3. Identifies cohorts at risk of churn
  4. Forms hypotheses about why they’re leaving
  5. Drafts potential actions

Then it pings you: “I found 100 users who didn’t return after their first session. I think it’s because the onboarding flow has a bug at step 3. Should I file a ticket for engineering?”

You look at the proposal. You confirm or modify. The system executes.

The inversion is profound: the agent is now the proactive one. It’s proposing specific actions based on your high-level goal. You’re no longer prompting — you’re approving.

Real Examples in Production

Magnus is already building this. He shared three examples:

Example 1: Morning Context Briefing

“Every morning at 6 a.m., check my calendar with whom am I meeting today, do web search about each of them, send me a Slack message with the context.”

He set this up once. Now every morning, the agent pings him with context about his day. He didn’t prompt 365 times — he prompted once, and the system recurs. “The agent prompts me every morning” with a summary.

This is the inversion in action: he set the goal, the agent set the schedule.

Example 2: Documentation Health Checks

“Every day I would have an agent going to my docs of my tool and checking if there are any problems with my docs, if there are like any broken links or anything unclear.”

Again, he prompted the system once with the goal. The agent now checks daily and only notifies him when there’s a problem: “I found broken links in the API docs. Should I flag these for your documentation team?”

Example 3: Real-World Use Case From a Customer

A user came to Magnus with a solar roof monitoring problem. They had a dashboard showing energy production, but they never checked it. When the system failed, they didn’t notice for two months and lost thousands in energy savings.

Instead of rebuilding their process, Magnus suggested: “Tell the agent to check your dashboard every morning and only ping you if something is broken.”

Now the user gets a message in WhatsApp if production drops unexpectedly. The agent is running continuously and proposing actions only when there’s something to act on.

The Shift in Cognitive Load

This inversion changes how you interact with technology. Instead of “what should I automate,” you’re thinking “what do I want to happen,” and the system figures out what to check, how often, and when to interrupt you.

Magnus frames it this way: “You can still hear me?” — the constant overhead of actively managing and prompting systems disappears. Automation stops being a chore you execute and becomes infrastructure that works for you.

But it requires a different kind of trust. You’re trusting the agent to:

  1. Understand your goal accurately (not add extra work you didn’t ask for)
  2. Know when to interrupt you (not ping you constantly, not miss actual problems)
  3. Execute approved actions correctly (not hallucinate or skip steps)

How It Works Technically

The system needs a few pieces:

Persistent infrastructure: The agent can’t live in your terminal. It needs to run somewhere, always available, even when you’re not thinking about it.

Scheduling: The agent needs to know when to check. Every hour? Daily? Based on a trigger condition?

Integration layer: The agent can’t just browse the web—it needs to connect to your Slack, email, WhatsApp, file system, dashboards. It needs to know how to notify you across whatever channels make sense.

Safety constraints: “If X happens, alert me” is different from “do whatever you think is best.” The agent needs boundaries. Magnus warns against over-automation: don’t let the agent execute without a human in the loop, at least initially.

Memory: The agent needs to remember previous runs. If it checked your docs yesterday, it should know what it checked so it only reports new problems today.

When This Gets Uncomfortable

There’s a valid concern buried here: what happens when you over-trust the agent? What if it starts proposing actions that make sense but aren’t what you want?

Magnus admits this: “Often you have a lot of wishful thinking. Often you think, if we would have this feature, everything will change.” Agents can amplify this—they’ll propose features based on their analysis, and you might implement them only to find they don’t move the needle.

The safeguard is approval gates. The agent proposes. You confirm. This forces a moment of reflection instead of pure automation.

But Magnus also uses agents to kill wishful thinking: “And what those coding engines help you know with it because you can just have this feature very quickly, like maybe one day and you release it next day and you see, okay, your business is exactly the same.”

Rapid iteration with approval gates beats slow, infrequent work.

The Transition State We’re In

We’re not fully inverted yet. Right now, this pattern requires sophisticated setup: writing the initial prompt carefully, integrating with the right tools, setting up notifications. By 2027, Magnus expects this to be default.

“I think we will see this year a change where you will stop prompting AI, but AI will prompt more and more you.”

The transition looks like this:

  • Today: You prompt systems constantly, hourly, trying different approaches
  • Next year: You set up goal-driven agents that run continuously and propose actions
  • Future state: The agent becomes so embedded that you forget you set it up — it’s just part of your operating system

The Founder’s Advantage

Young founders have an edge here because they haven’t built muscle memory around “I’ll just do this manually.”

“If you want to increase your reach of your podcast, you want to make more revenue, you want to make more people happy… right now to maybe you achieve those goals, maybe you watch the recordings yourself, maybe you try to send people a newsletter, maybe you come up with like 10 different ideas and then to execute those ideas, you go and you go to different platforms, click, click to do those things.”

Experienced operators often optimize these manual workflows. Younger folks are more likely to say “I’ll just build an agent to do this.” And they’ll get better results faster because they’re not locked into a pattern.

Building This Into Your System

If you’re designing products for agents, think about this shift. Instead of asking users “what do you want to automate,” ask “what goals do you have?” Let them set objectives. Show them what the agent proposes. Let them refine.

Products that succeed in the agent era will be the ones where you stop interacting frequently. You set it, it runs, you approve proposals. The low-interaction products will win.

FAQ

How often should my agent interrupt me?

Start with low frequency (once daily digest) and increase only if you find you’re missing important information. The agent should optimize for signal-to-noise ratio, not completeness. An alert that triggers daily is useless if 80% of days have nothing important.

What if the agent proposes something I don’t want?

That’s healthy. It means the agent’s understanding of your goal is slightly different from yours. Clarify: “I want higher retention but not at the expense of feature quality.” These refinements make the agent smarter. But don’t let the system become a suggestion engine—maintain approval gates.

Can I set multiple high-level goals for one agent?

Yes, but carefully. “I want higher retention AND I want faster shipping” might conflict. An agent optimizing both might cut features that hurt retention (so you ship faster) but improve retention (so you reach the goal). Be specific about trade-offs. Better to have one agent per clear goal.

How do I prevent the agent from over-automating?

Manual approval gates, at least initially. As you build trust, you can increase autonomy. Start with “propose all actions to me” and move toward “execute actions in this category without approval” and finally “execute autonomously and report weekly.” Build trust gradually.

What’s the difference between a scheduled task and an agent-driven workflow?

Scheduled tasks do the same thing every time. “Run this script at midnight.” Agents respond to data. “Run this script if the condition is true.” Agents learn and adapt. “Run this script differently based on previous results.” Agents propose. “Here’s what I found and what I think we should do.”

Does this require constant internet access?

For continuous monitoring, yes. But not for the human. The agent can run on a server. You receive notifications when needed. You don’t need to be online; the agent is always on.

How do I know if my agent is working or just running without value?

Track outcomes. “I wanted higher retention. Did it happen?” If the agent is proposing good actions but they’re not moving the metric, either the proposals are wrong or the actions aren’t being executed. Run experiments. Measure. Don’t assume the agent is working—verify.
